Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido

The international surf-social capital: cafés, DJs, board racks, everyone under 35.

Best for: Solo travelers, surfers, anyone whose trip is powered by meeting people.

Trade-offs: The most gentrified pocket of town: prices have surged past the rest of the coast, high-season availability evaporates, sandy streets are rough on toes and scooters, and persistent weed sellers are part of the streetscape. Quiets by midnight, but not before.

Getting around: Everything internal is walkable; 15–25 min by taxi/scooter to everywhere else.

Insider note — If La Punta quotes shock you, look one ring out — Lázaro and the Brisas edges run a fraction of strip prices, and residents trade leads in local WhatsApp groups rather than booking platforms. Book strip stays months ahead for Dec–Mar.

Front-row to the famous wave and the town’s biggest restaurant-bar strip.

Best for: Nightlife-first trips, surf spectators, anyone who wants the action outside the door.

Trade-offs: Club noise carries; the beach outside is not for swimming; sunset-tax pricing at the front row.

Getting around: Strip life on foot; steep hill or short cab to Centro.

Insider note — Rooms one or two streets back keep the location and lose most of the bass.

Leafy, low-rise, quietly excellent: the neighborhood that has the town’s best dinner cluster and its best swimming cove.

Best for: Couples, families, everyone 30+ who wants great food and calm nights — our default recommendation.

Trade-offs: Sleepy after dinner; the one truly local beach is down (and back up) a serious staircase; long-stayers warn you can feel you’ve "done" the immediate area within a couple of days without transport.

Getting around: Internally excellent; cheap, abundant taxis bridge to La Punta nightlife in minutes.

Insider note — The sweet spot: Rinconada stay + Carrizalillo mornings + taxi to La Punta the two nights you want the scene.

The actual Mexican town: markets, botaneros, fishing-harbor mornings, small-town rhythm.

Best for: Budget travelers, market eaters, anyone who wants Puerto rather than a resort orbit of it.

Trade-offs: Least "vacation-pretty" of the areas; the hill between Centro and Zicatela is a workout; town beach is functional, not gorgeous.

Getting around: Best transit hub in town — colectivos and buses radiate from here.

Insider note — Staying near the bus terminal makes every beach in town a short cheap hop — the resident’s logistics play.

Wide streets, resort-and-villa calm, sunset beach clubs, the turtle release at your doorstep.

Best for: Families with cars, longer stays wanting space and pools, turtle-release + whale-tour proximity.

Trade-offs: You will taxi or drive for most meals and all nightlife; the beach itself is red-flag water.

Getting around: Car/scooter territory.

Insider note — Within a 25-minute walk of both the turtle release and the Angelito tour boats — the wildlife-first base.

The overflow neighborhoods where the coast still rents at pre-boom prices.

Best for: Monthly stays, remote workers, anyone trading a 10-minute ride for half the rent.

Trade-offs: Fewer polished restaurants; unpaved stretches; you’re commuting (pleasantly) to the scene.

Getting around: Scooter strongly recommended.
