What's new: the terminal opening in October 2026

A new passenger terminal is scheduled to open in October as part of a $200 million investment aimed at lifting the airport's capacity past three million passengers a year in its first phase. To put that in context: PXM handled 948,590 passengers in 2025, which made it Mexico's 28th busiest airport. The operator has described handling roughly 300,000 passengers when work began in 2023 — so this is a facility that has tripled its traffic in three years and is building for triple again.

What this means for you practically:

• Flying in before October 2026? Expect the current terminal: compact, functional, occasionally overwhelmed when two flights land together. Immigration and baggage claim are one small hall, with limited seating and limited air conditioning.
• Flying in after the new terminal opens? Expect a construction-adjacent transition period. New terminals in Mexico routinely open in phases, with some airlines and functions moving before others. Check your airline's confirmation email for terminal instructions rather than assuming.
• Either way, arrivals move faster than you'd fear. There is no train, no shuttle bus system, no sprawling concourse. You walk off the plane, cross tarmac, clear immigration, and you're outside.

Our verdict: PXM is one of the easiest international arrivals in Mexico precisely because it's still small. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Who flies here in 2026

Seven airlines currently serve PXM, connecting to thirteen airports. The route map has shifted significantly in the last two years, so here's the current picture.

Domestic

• Viva — Mexico City (both AICM and Felipe Ángeles/NLU), Guadalajara. Currently the largest operator at PXM by scheduled departures.
• Volaris — Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Tijuana, resumed 2 June 2026, operating three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with A320s. If you're coming from the border or Baja, this route reopening saves you a Mexico City connection.
• Aeroméxico Connect — Mexico City–Benito Juárez.
• Aerotucán / Aerovega — Oaxaca City. Small aircraft, roughly 40 minutes, spectacular over the Sierra. See our getting-there guide for whether this beats the new highway.

International

• United Express — Houston–Intercontinental. PXM's first international service, launched April 2025 as a year-round route.
• American Eagle — Dallas/Fort Worth. The longest nonstop into PXM at about 3 hours 30 minutes.
• Air Canada Rouge — seasonal Toronto–Pearson, with Vancouver service beginning 8 December 2026.
• WestJet — seasonal Calgary.

The airport's director general has publicly flagged Texas demand as unusually strong, describing those flights as consistently full — the clearest signal available that more U.S. routes are coming. Getting from PXM into town

This is the part every other guide gets vague about, so here is the honest version.

Authorized airport taxi. There is a taxi desk in arrivals. You pay at the desk, get a ticket, and a driver takes you. Rates are zone-based and posted — Rinconada and the town center are the cheapest zones, Zicatela is mid, La Punta is the most expensive because it's furthest. Journey time to Zicatela is roughly 15–20 minutes outside peak traffic.

Colectivo / camioneta. Walk out of the airport to the main highway and flag a passing colectivo heading east. Dramatically cheaper than a taxi, and slower, and it will not take you to your door — it drops you on the highway nearest your neighborhood. Viable with a backpack, miserable with two suitcases.

Rideshare. Do not plan around it. Uber's presence in Puerto Escondido has been inconsistent and airport pickups in particular are contested by the local taxi union. Assume it won't work and be pleasantly surprised if it does.

Pre-booked private transfer. Worth it if you're arriving after dark, travelling with kids, or landing at the same time as two other flights. The advantage isn't cost — it's that someone is holding a sign with your name while forty people queue at the taxi desk.

Our verdict: For a couple with normal luggage going to Zicatela or La Punta, the authorized taxi is the right call — fixed-price, regulated, and the time saving over a colectivo is worth more than the peso difference. For solo budget travellers staying in La Punta, the colectivo is genuinely fine.

Where to stay relative to the airport

The airport sits west of town, which makes the geography slightly counterintuitive. Rinconada is closest — quietest and most residential, best if you have an early departure. Zicatela, the surf strip, is 15–20 minutes. La Punta is furthest at 25–30 minutes, worth the transfer if La Punta is your scene. El Centro / Adoquín is 10–15 minutes, closest to the fishing beach and the bus terminals. Full neighborhood breakdown in where to stay.

If your flight lands late, staying the first night in Rinconada or El Centro and moving to La Punta the next day is a legitimate strategy.

Practical arrival notes

• Cash. There are ATMs, but the airport ones run dry during holiday weekends and charge high fees. Arrive with some pesos or withdraw in town.
• SIM / eSIM. Buy an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is decent in town and patchy on the outer beaches.
• Departures. Get to PXM earlier than the small-airport instinct suggests, especially during Semana Santa, July, and the December–January peak. One security line plus three simultaneous departures is a real scenario.
• Airport code confusion. PXM is Puerto Escondido. OAX is Oaxaca City, 250 km inland over the mountains. Booking the wrong one is a genuinely common and expensive mistake.

What to book before you land
