Playa Principal & Playa Marinero

Playa Principal is Puerto doing its day job: fishermen landing the dawn catch, pangas loading tour groups, pelicans working the shallows, the Adoquín’s restaurants looking on. Adjoining Marinero picks up where the harbor bustle thins. Nobody’s trip highlight is swimming here — but no visit to Puerto makes sense without a morning on this sand, because this is the town the beach neighborhoods forget to be.

Mornings: the fish and the boats

Come between 6:30 and 8am: the fleet lands, the beach becomes a fish market, and the town’s freshest ceviche ingredients change hands off the tailgates. This is also a departure point for fishing charters and coastal tours — like Angelito, arranging in person at the sand is the local-price route.

Swimming, honestly rated

The bay is protected and usually calm — physically the easiest swim in central Puerto. It is also a working harbor: boat traffic, occasional sheen near the moorings, and urban runoff after rains. Fine for a convenience dip near the Marinero end on a clear day; not the swim to build your beach day around when Carrizalillo is ten minutes away. After heavy rain, skip it entirely.

Marinero and the evening

Playa Marinero, past the rocks toward Zicatela, trades harbor bustle for a quieter town-beach feel and a small learners’ wave some schools use. Evenings, the Adoquín (Avenida Pérez Gasga, pedestrianized nightly) is old Puerto’s promenade: the street market runs every night from about 5pm to midnight — later on weekends — and most of the tables are the actual shop owners moving their artesanías onto the street, not itinerant stalls. Add the botaneros and family paseo and it’s a genuinely Mexican night out two hundred meters from the tourist strips.

Dry-season reports from the same thread are far kinder: months of daily swims, locals in the water, no trouble.

Our take: Our rule stands, now with receipts: Principal is a dry-day convenience dip, never a post-rain swim. When in doubt — and always after a storm — Carrizalillo is ten minutes away.
